Fresh, Interesting Designs

What does a 1930 Citroen C4 have in common with a 2011 Cadillac Coupe? “Both are examples of fresh, interesting designs,”says Stewart Reed , Chairman of the Transportation Design Department of Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. “And those are exactly the kinds of cars we’re expecting for a two-day, Pasadena-to-Monterey drive.”

The first annual event will leave the celebrated design school on August l4, 2011, via picturesque and challenging country roads, arriving at Monterey on August l5 in time for Pebble Beach’s weeklong homage to classic cars.

Organizer Martin Swig and Reed will judge cars on their “significant design merit” regardless of age or make. “Our legendary friend David E. Davis, Jr. said it best,” revealed Swig,”when he told us he liked everything--- except ‘boring cars.’ ”

Boring Cars

What would be boring? “A Nissan Juke would fit the Unaccaptable Category. Its design message is confused” said Swig, organizer of the California Mille and an auto journalist. “Add to the Boring List the ‘improved’ Chrysler Airflow. The original design was well ahead of its time, but Detroit decided to blunt the front end to make it more more popular--and it lost its design edge,” said Reed.

Design Worthy Cars

Some twenty or more more “design worthy” cars are expected to meet at Art Center’s Hillside Campus at 1700 Lida Street, Pasadena, at 8:00 AM on Sunday, August l4 , for a departure breakfast. The group will then caravan north some 507 miles passing through Palmdale, Gorman, Frazier Park and Taft, arriving at the Paso Robles Inn about 5 PM for the night. The morning of August l5, the tour will continue its back roads passage to Monterey by way of Bradley, Coalinga and King City enjoying a welcoming margarita at the Baja Cantina in Carmel Valley with Photography Major students from Art Center recording the arrival and festivities.
